大晦日（おおみそか）Ōmisoka

12月31日（じゅうにがつさんじゅういちにち)は、大晦日（おおみそか）と言（い）います。
大晦日（おおみそか）とは、一年（いちねん）の最後（さいご）の日と言う意味です。

December 31st is called　Ōmisoka 　 .
It means the last day of the year.

その日(ひ)は、「年越（としこ）し（蕎麦）そば」を食（た）べます。
意味(いみ)は、蕎麦（そば）が、他（ほか）の麺類（めんるい）より細（ほそ）く,切（き）れやすいところから、「旧年（きゅうねん）の災難（さいなん）から縁（えん）を絶（た）つと言う事です。。
そして、蕎麦（そば）のように、細（ほそ）く長生（ながい）きが出来（でき）ますようにと願（ねが）う」のです。

On that day, we will eat "Toshikoshi soba".
The meaning is that soba is thinner and easier to cut than other noodles.
And I hope that you can live a long and thin life like soba noodles. "

また、夜中（よなか）に、お寺（てら）では、「除夜（じょや）の鐘（かね）」を、近所（きんじょ）の人（ひと）が来（き）て鐘（かね）を打（う）ちます。
「除夜（じょや）の鐘（かね）」は、108回打（ひゃくはちかい　う）ちますが、それは、一年間（いちねんかん）の、「108（ひゃくやっつ）の煩悩（ぼんのう）を払（はら）う」事（こと）を意味（いみ）します。
「煩悩」（ぼんのう）とは、仏教用語（ぶっきょうようご）です。
その意味（いみ）は、「心身（しんしん）を苦（くる）しめる心（こころ）の穢（けが）れ」の事（こと）です。

Also, in the middle of the night, at the temple, a neighbor will come and hit the "Jyoya no kane".
"Jyoya no kane" hits 108 times, which means "Dispel 108 Bon'nō " for a year.
”Bon'nō" is a Buddhist term.
The meaning is " impurity of the mind that afflicts the mind and body".
